A band of virtuoso instrumentalists explores new spheres of experience. The Taksim Trio from Istanbul plays music which effortlessly picks and chooses from local tradition and international modernism and conjures up melodic arabesques derived from folk, gypsy, Latin, pop and jazz. The combination of the three instruments they play is unique for Turkish music. Aytaç Dogan plays the qanun, a type of zither with 26 courses of strings, and has previously ventured into blues, Latin and classical music. Hüsnü Sendelirici is one of Turkey’s most famous clarinetists and has had number-one hits as well as played with American musicians. Ismail Tuncbilek plays the bag˘ lama or saz, the Turkish long-necked lute, and has toured in Egypt, Israel and Spain, where he has accompanied Paco de Lucía. The concert of the Taksim Trio on the lakeside stage will be a musical abduction into enchanted oriental gardens. (ron)
